Every time you switch tabs, your brain pays a tax.

And 10 context switches is an extraordinarily conservative number. Some research puts the average closer to 400 task switches in a single workday.
The math becomes genuinely disturbing if you follow it.
What Your Brain Is Actually Doing
The human brain is not a computer. We consistently make the mistake of treating it like one — especially when it comes to switching between tasks.
When a computer switches processes, it saves the current state, loads the next one, and executes. The switch is instant. Nothing is lost.
Your brain does not work this way.
When you shift attention from one task to another, your prefrontal cortex has to perform what cognitive scientists call goal shifting and rule activation. It has to unload one set of mental instructions and load a completely different set.

Gloria Mark, the researcher behind the original UC Irvine study, spent two decades following this thread. In later research, she found that frequently interrupted workers reported higher stress, more frustration, and felt compelled to work faster to compensate — producing not just less work, but worse work, under more self-imposed pressure.
This is the hidden shape of modern knowledge work. Always busy. Rarely focused. Exhausted by 3pm despite the feeling that nothing real got done.
The Tab Model Was Never Designed for This
To understand why tabs are such a productivity trap, it helps to remember when they were invented.
Tabbed browsing emerged in the early 2000s, when the typical user might have three or four websites open at once. Tabs were a neat solution to a simple problem: how do you keep multiple pages accessible without opening multiple windows?
That is not the problem we have in 2025.
Today, the average knowledge worker uses their browser as an operating system. Their project management tool is a tab. Their communication platform is a tab. Their analytics, their documents, their design tool, their AI assistant — all tabs.
The browser became the operating system for most professional work. And it was never designed to be.

Here is the interesting flip side of everything the research shows: when you can see something, you do not have to remember it.
Working memory — the mental scratchpad your brain uses to hold information while thinking — is severely limited. Most research puts it at around four chunks of information at a time.
When your work is hidden behind tabs, you use working memory just to track where everything is. You burn cognitive resources on navigation before you even begin the actual thinking.
When everything is visible at once, that load disappears. Your brain stops tracking and starts thinking.
This is why traders use multiple monitors. Why air traffic controllers have panoramic displays. Why surgeons lay every instrument out on a tray before they begin. In environments where decisions matter, visibility is not a luxury.
It is a design requirement.
The highest-stakes professional environments in the world do not operate on the hidden-tab model. They operate on the opposite principle.
The Compounding Cost
Let us put a rough number on this.
Assume you are a typical knowledge worker — a founder, developer, marketer, or creative professional — working 250 days a year.
Assume 20 meaningful context switches per day. Conservative. At a discounted cost of just 5 minutes per switch (not the full 23), that is 100 minutes of lost productive capacity per day.
25,000 minutes per year.
416 hours.
More than ten full working weeks, silently consumed by the friction between your tabs.
If your time is worth $50 an hour, that is $20,000 in lost capacity per year, per person. If you are a founder or senior operator, the number scales accordingly.
